It's just that when he melted down, he REALLY melted down, and that negatively affected my view of him overall. For example, in one stretch of three appearances, he blew two saves, and over one nine-game stretch, he had a 8.59 ERA (and in one 10 game stretch dating back to his time with the Mariners, he had a 15.75 mark).

Gott reminds me of how Manny Acosta was in 2012. Acosta had a 6.46 ERA overall, despite posting a 1.78 ERA over the final three months of the season (totaling 26 appearances). For considerable stretches, Gott and Acosta were lights-out. But because they were beyond awful at times, too, their whole seasons look much worse than they were.
