Memory and perception don't always mesh with reality. I was originally going to say what a dud this guy was. Givens was brought in to help the team down the stretch in 2022 and it seemed like he was a total letdown.
He gave up 5 earned runs in 2/3 of an inning in his first appearance with the Mets, which didn't help his final ERA (4.79). But actually, after his first horrid game, his ERA was 2.70 in 18 appearances the rest of the way. Not bad at all.
It just seems like when he did poorly, he totally melted down. And those are the performances that tend to stick with you.
Also, his total failure in the postseason doesn't help either.
So, I guess, in the long run, Givens wasn't awful, but he wasn't everything we needed when it counted the most. Thankfully all we gave up was a single decent prospect and nothing more.
