I just had a premonition that Max is going to pitch a no hitter tonight, April 19, in the second game of a doubleheader against the SF Giants.
Why? It's a cold night, and he's Mad Max.

Max is one of those guys who will let a friend sleep on his couch if they need but if you touch so much as a speck of dirt on his mound on Scherzdays he won't rest until you're six feet under. I love him.
Oh, and he's also won three Cy Youngs, so there's that.

He was good this year, but it's hard to say I'm satisfied. He was paid $43 million to miss a third of the season? Nah, that's not good enough. It's like if he missed 40 games as an offensive player. That's not a quality season, because its nowhere near a full season. You get paid to play.
He was good, don't get me wrong. Extrapolated out over a full season his numbers would be Cy Young-quality. But he was brought on to be good throughout a whole campaign.
And then there's the meltdown in Game 1 of the Wild Card series. Come on, Max. Earn your paycheck.

Just as I figured! A successful major leaguer starts to go downhill after joining the Mets. Max had compiled a Cooperstown resume with other teams over fourteen seasons before coming to New York. As a Met, he gave up seven runs in the opener of a Wild Card series in which the team was defeated. Scherzer then received a ten-game suspension and suffered a neck injury the following season. It seems that he is just another Hall-of-Famer who will conclude his spectacular career with a few unproductive years in a Mets uniform. How many times has this happened?

He was hurt his first year and inconsistent his second, but in the aggregate, Max Scherzer was ... solid. I liked seeing him pitch, because even if he wasn't 100% on, he'd keep the team in the game. At the time of his trade in 2023, he was the team's leader in victories with 9.
Overall, Scherzer was 20-9 with a 3.02 ERA in 42 starts with the Mets. He had 294 strikeouts and just 54 walks allowed in 253 innings. Can't go wrong there.
Did he lead us to the promised land? No, but he was fun to watch.
Way back in 2009, before he established himself as a future Hall of Famer, I received Scherzer's autograph through-the-mail in just 21 days care of the Diamondbacks. I tried him again in 2014 through Detroit, but by that time, he was charging $20 and sent back a price list saying as much.
