I respected him as a Phillie when he was playing well. I was intrigued that the Mets were able to claim him off waivers from the Giants after a one-game trial. He was the third player of 2019 to homer in his first AB as a NYM. His came as a PH in the 6th inning off Buck Farmer - it was a solo shot that put the Mets ahead briefly until Drew Gagnon blew it a half inning later, surrendering three runs and taking the loss. As I write this, he has been DFA'd by the Mets.

Altherr was definitely a one-year wonder ... but that one year was not with the Mets. With the Phillies in 2017, he clobbered 19 home runs with 65 RBI in 107 games.
The next year, he hit like a bench player (.181 in 105 G) then like a pitcher in 2019 (.082 in 49 G; .034 in 22 G with Phillie).
Though he spent just 26 games with New York in 2019, I was at one of them. I witnessed Altherr strikeout against Pittsburgh hurler Yefry Ramirez on August 4. The Mets beat the Pirates 13-2 that day, with Ramirez surrendering 5 of those runs.

Never heard of the guy (haven't followed much baseball lately), but he does have a cool name: Aaron Old Man. But he doesn't seem to rate with Ruth and Gehrig as German baseball players.
