He was a guy you couldn't fathom why they signed him or why they gave him more than a couple games' audition. He made 15 appearances for the team in 2019. 15. Were they that bad? (No, they were actually decent, going 86-76).

Sure, he struck a lot of guys out. But he was 29 and had already spent parts of four seasons in the majors, debuting initially in 2012. Before 2019 he had never pitched more than 19 games in a season. Before 2019, he walked too many batters, gave up too many hits and surrendered too many home runs (a legacy he continued in New York), so he had already proven he was ensconced in mediocrity.

Maybe they might have actually been a playoff team in 2019 had they not been giving guys like Font, Drew Gagnon (18 G, 8.37 ERA) and Tyler Bashlor (24 G, 6.95 ERA) so many tries.

He has since gone to Korea and found his groove, however, going 13-6 with a 2.69 ERA in 28 starts in 2022.
