I primarily remember Fred Lewis as a solid player for the Giants for a few years. What I remember most about Lewis with the Mets is he was a September call-up. I thought that was wonky—usually, it seems, September call ups are minor leaguers or players with limited big league experience getting a bit of a tryout. But here was Lewis, an established big leaguer, getting the call instead. His promotion wasn't a bad idea at the time, as he'd had a good year at Triple-A, batting .294 with 13 home runs and 25 steals.
After his big league stay, he went to Japan, then forged a three-year career in indy ball. I received his autograph through the mail care of the the independent Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in 2016. I sent to him again in 2020 through his home address, but he didn't respond.
