i am fairly certain he was the first met to have 5 or6? hits in a nine inning game against the cubs in the Mets classic 19-1 blowout of bob buhl and the cubs.

Dick is alive and well and living in Medford, OR. He is still one of the nicest guys on the planet.

In 1964, Dick Smith became the first Met to hit 3 doubles in a game on May 14th and the first Met to get five hits in a game on May 26th when the Mets beat the Cubs 19-1. Unfortunately, he went 13 for 83 in his other 44 games and was sent down to Buffalo (AAA) in June.

I collect autographs for fun as a hobby from back in the day 60's and early70's when I was growing up. Dick Smith's autograph is highly sought after in the hobby. There are I believe 3 or 4 other players of MLB (from back in the day) whose autographs are fairly easy to obtain via the mail -- who are ALSO named Dick Smith. Of course, nobody is obligated to sign autographs, and in our troubled and difficult times many people understandably value their privacy highly. I just think it's noteworthy of how these other "Dick Smith" ex MLB players (from what I hear from other hobbyists) get many requests for the autograph of ex Met and Dodger Dick Smith born 1939.
