I was at this game. I was 12 at the time and it was another one of those games where Seaver was outstanding but the Mets did not score runs for him. Frustrating. I think he got his 2,500th career strikeout in this game also.

A sunny and hot weekday afternoon at Shea. I went to celebrate my birthday and got to see The Franchise (with absolutely no apologies to the late M. Donald Grant) get his 2000th strikeout against his future team. I had no idea he was close to 2000 but it was neat to be there for it. But it was even better being at Seaver's 300th win, upstaging The Scooter on his day in the Bronx ten years later.

That's right; it was his 2,000 K. I had 2,500.

Seaver is still the best pitcher I ever saw. I did not see Koufax and I saw Gibson after his prime.

Great game for a 10-year-old to be at the stadium. I remember the deafening boos every time Pete Rose came to the plate - the fans still raw over his fight with Buddy two years earlier. I also didn't know Seaver got his 2,000 K when he whiffed Driessen until the scoreboard flashed it.

I remember the long chorus of boos when Jerry Dale called John Stearns out at third. Photos in the paper the next day make it look like he got his foot in.. I remember Seaver being thrown out at the plate later that inning - the Mets just couldn't get a run... And despite pitching brilliantly I remember Seaver being pulled for a pinch hitter once again because the Mets couldn't muster any offense. I wonder how many no decisions and losses Seaver took because he was pulled for a pinch hitter in a 0-0, 1-0, or 1-1 games.

When we got tickets for the game I was bummed because I didn't think they could beat the Reds, but when they won the first two games of the series I had hope. I remember the night before Koosman blew a sign and actually took off from first trying to steal second and caught the Reds so off guard Bench threw the ball into CF and eventually win the game. But despite coming so close to breaking it open the Mets lose on my day 2-1. I was sure in the 9th they would pull it out, especially with two on and Kingman up - after all Kong couldn't strike out 4 times in that game - what did I know - I was 10. Still have the scorecard and the ticket stubs..

Almost forgot.. The same inning Stearns was thrown out at third and Seaver was thrown out at the plate the Mets pulled off quite a feat. In an era where the Mets offense struggled, and in a game where they lost to the Big Red Machine 2- 1, they managed to get 4 hits in this inning without scoring a run. Mathmatically I believe the most number of hits you can get without scoring is 5.

Example One
The Mets suck! They need to trade Smith and get somebody like Jones.
This comment is off-topic and will be removed. It has nothing to do with any specific game. But here's an acceptable alternative:

Example Two
The Mets suck! Smith made three errors in this game, and hit into a double play, and the Mets blew a 5-0 lead. They need to get rid of Smith and get somebody like Jones.
See the difference? Here you're getting the same point across, but it's in the proper context. We wouldn't consider this message to be off-topic, and we would let it remain.
