Whatever happens with Steven Matz, his first game will always be recalled. Hopefully it will be fairly trivial, compared to other accomplishments, but an early round draft local guy making the team as a pitcher, winning the game, and getting three hits and a record breaking debut four rbis will be remembered for a long time.

We all waited and waited for Steven Matz to take that next step but it never happened. 2020 has been a horrendous season for Steven with an ERA over 9. What a shame. So much talent but could never get over the hump. Has a lost puppy dog mentality on the mound.

Steven Matz was recently traded, leaving just two of the "big 5" Mets starters in the rotation: Jacob DeGrom and Noah Syndergaard.
As we did with all of them, we had such high hopes for Matz. He started out 4-0 with a 2.27 ERA in his first tryout with the Mets, then in his first full campaign, he finished 6th in Rookie of the Year voting, posting a 3.40 ERA in 22 starts. Remember in his very first appearance, he also went 3-for-3 with a double and 4 RBI at the plate? He could do it all!
But he couldn't stay healthy and it was all downhill from there. He was always the weakest of the 5 pitchers in terms of ceiling, but had he put it together, he would have been one of the best #4 or 5 starters in the league.
