Saw him pitch on SNY when they were showing the Buffalo Bisons (which is now the Blue Jays AAA team and our AAA team is in Las Vegas which is a big cup of wrong). Can't wait to see him come up to Citi this summer so he and Matt Harvey can be the Seaver-Koosman of the 21st century.

Was involved in a recent incident while pitching a minor-league game where he may have said some anti-Latino remarks. Let's hope Zack is the next Jerry Koosman and NOT the next John Rocker.

WOW! I was very impressed with Zack Wheeler's debut last night. He held a good hitting Braves team to 0 runs and pitched 6 innings! The future is looking bright with Harvey and Wheeler!

Wheeler demonstrated excellent pitching smarts in his first game against the Braves (19 Jun 13). On two occasions, with Braves on the bases, he did a nice job pitching around Freddie Freeman that helped prevent any runs from scoring.
He does need to work on his hitting, though. Oh, man, he looked like Mike Pelfrey when he swung the bat! LOL

You could tell he was a bit nervous pitching against his hometown team but he came through with flying colors. I like the fact that he's wearing #45 because that number has had a big impact in Mets history (Tug, John Franco after he gave up #31 for Piazza, Pedro) but HE SHOULDN'T BE BATTING LEFT HANDED. Gooden wanted to bat left handed but Mets officials said "NYET" to that idea. God forbid anything happens to Zack while he's at-bat or else I'll be screaming for the National League to finally put in the DH full time!

The Mets have just announced that they are "shutting" Wheeler "down" for the rest of the season, amounted to Wheeler missing 2 or at the most 3 starts. Why? He's young, he's strong, ostensibly he's part of the Mets' future, and he'll probably be making a fortune a couple of years down the line. In these modern days of pitch counts and overcautious handling of investments that aren't made with people named Madoff, the fans must be forced to watch retreads like Matsuzaka or Harang instead of the players who might mean something to the franchise going forward. This is an idea that was pioneered by the Nationals with Strasbourg a couple of years ago, and now the Mets are proving that they too can "shut down" healthy players for the good of the organization.
I think it's reprehensible and a perfectly legal way to defraud the long-suffering fan. So this is a post less about Wheeler than it is about the Mets and baseball in general, which are going utterly to hell.

I saw something on baseballreference.com about Zack that I found quite interesting. Based on his first season at age 23, Baseball Reference has listed the pitchers that Zack is most similar to. # 1 most similar at age 23 is Brad Bergesen (who I've never heard of), 2 and 3 are Cactus Keck and Schoolboy Rowe (great names), 6 and 7 are Cy Young and Oil Can Boyd (a likely pair), 9 is Charlie Lea (who I think pitched a no-hitter for the Expos) and 10 is Steve Trachsel (no comment necessary).
Personally, I hope his career will be more Cy Young and less Steve Trachsel.

Has now missed two full big-league seasons, with a grand total of one inning pitched in the minors. The latest talk is that he may be used in the pen in 2017.

His 2014 stats show that Wheeler has true ML ability. It's too bad his career has been derailed by injuries. I still think this was a good trade at the time it was made. Beltran appeared to be on the downside of his career and Wheeler was a former #1 draft pick by the Giants.

Congrats to Zack on earning his first trip to the All-Star Game. He's been a very good pitcher these past few years. Unfortunately, he's a Philadelphia Phillie, but hey, Michael Wacha and Rick Porcello were better options at the time, right? Brodie Van Wagenen was not a very good GM.
