HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY:

Larry, you're right. As a Mets pitcher, Shaun Marcum was, well, I don't want to use the term "dumpster fire" because that's somewhat of a cliche, so let's just say he was a chemical spill. He was 1-10 with a 5.29 ERA as the emergency 5th starter in the rotation for the 2013 Mets. amazingly, Terry Collins sent him to the hill 12 times before they mercifully cut him.

I do have one pleasant memory of Marcum. As a Blue Jay in 2008, he was solid for my fantasy baseball team. He was a shrewd early-season pickup from the trash heap who helped me win a few weeks on the way to the championship for that league.

I looked up his 2008 game logs and he had a 2.65 ERA through his last start in June 2008, then got hurt or something and was shelved for a month. I surely dropped him at that point, so Marcum surely wasn't on my team after that and thus missed out on the championship.

I was curious how Marcum's horrendous 2013 season ranks among "all-time worst" lists for Mets starters' seasons in the history of the franchise, so I did a quick search and found "10 worst seasons by starting pitchers in the 2010s", on RisingApple.com. According to them, it's Matt Harvey's 2017 season when he was 5-7 with a 6.70 ERA and a -1 Win Above Replacement. That's negative one.

In 2013, Shaun "Chemical Spill" Marcum was released in July, but his 1-10 record and 5.29 ERA had garnered him a WAR of -0.9, so RisingApple.com is right. So thanks to Matt Harvey's atrocious 2017 season (as well as only playing half a season), Marcum stays off the number one spot on the list.

In fact, the Mets had so many bad pitchers in the 2010s that he doesn't even make the list. After Harvey in 2017, they rank Rafael Montero in 2017 (-1 WAR) and Jason Vargas (-1 WAR) in 2018 as numbers two and three, and according to baseballreference.com, both were indeed worse than Marcum in 2013.

Marcum should be #4 on the list, but he doesn't register. Yes, he did make only 12 starts, but his 1-10 record is good for the second-worst winning percentage for a Mets starter, all-time.

I think part of the reason no one remembers him is because as a Mets pitcher, every start he made was a certain loss.
