Picked up on waivers 8/25. 2 games, 3 at bats later on 8/30 they designate him for assignment. Why? Why pick him up and then release him? No need to pick him up in the first place but if you do, why release him right before 9/1? I am usually pretty optimistic about Mets moves but this is a small example of what a joke their front office is.

I remember Buchanan primarily from his time with the Twins. A big, power hitting bench guy who slugged well,* but that's about it.
I'm trying convince myself that I remember his time with the Mets, but I'm not 100% sure of it. A little research shows he struck out against the immortal Blaine Neal of the Padres in his first at-bat with the team, then in his last game, he faced off against Kaz Ishii and Elmer Dessens of the Dodgers, who would both go on to pitch for the Mets.
Also for whatever reason, whenever I think of Brian Buchanan, I think of Bubba Trammell.
*though maybe not as well as I thought. He spent 16 years in pro ball and hit just 173 home runs. Not bad, but barely 10 a year isn't much of a "slugger."
