I didn't like giving this lame-0 a shot in spring training and I don't see him having a future with the Mets, or any other team for that matter. He was throwing meat up there against the D-backs that was getting whacked all over. 27.00 ERA after the first start. Maybe lousy actor Alec Baldwin can pitch? Doug August 19, 2006 I remember watching a SportsCenter recap of the game he pitched in Arizona. They said that an official Major League Baseball costs 21 dollars. An official Major League Baseball autographed by James Baldwin costs 6 dollars. I found that amusing. Menachem G. Jerenberg March 28, 2010 Spring Training has rolled around again, and I am reminded of how Baldwin wowed many people, including me, prior to 2004 Opening Day... his stats tell the rest :-/ Mitch45 October 29, 2010 I actually did not know that Baldwin was a Met. Given his brief tenure in Flushing (5 days), I expect a lot of others missed it too. I remember Baldwin as being an innings-eater type of guy, a decent back of the rotation starter. Alex July 23, 2021 When I was a kid, I was always enamored with how bad James Baldwin was and I wondered how he kept getting jobs for so long. This was before I knew about stuff like "era adjustments", where you have to adjust for the fact that he pitched in a highly offensive era so despite his career 5.01 ERA he was better than he looked. Or something like that. I guess there's some validity to that, since he was an All Star and had a career winning record. But by the time he got to the Mets, he was done. He was bitten by what killed him earlier in his career -- lots of hits and home runs allowed. He struck out exactly one guy as a New York Met, and it was a big name: Future Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell. It is a small world, however, as he was actually once traded for another former Mets flash in the pan, Jeff Barry, a few years earlier in 2001. Alex February 22, 2023 I was rather surprised to see Baldwin continued his career after his poor stint with the Mets in 2004. By that point, he had been on the decline for a few years and was 7-13 with a 5.63 ERA between 2002 and 2004. However, he had a decent season in relief in 2005, posting a 3.81 ERA in 28 games to wrap up his career. I've written three autograph requests to him in my day, once in 2012, once in 2017 and once in 2019—all through his home address—and he has yet to sign.
