I think at Shea, he'll be real solid. Provided he's healthy, I think he'll be a great addition. Greg January 17, 2002 This signing is going to bite us in the ass. How do you give a guy $5 million when it is a medical fact that he has arm trouble? This is ridiculous. Never mind the fact that he was almost deported for beating his wife. Rick Helling (who has NEVER been on the DL) or James Baldwin would have been better options. kinerskorner January 17, 2002 Obviously Astacio has had some arm trouble, and that's an issue, but at least he HAS an upside. If the guy's not healthy, he's making 5 million and that sucks. But if he is, he's a solid number 2, and can do at least what Appier did for them last year. Baldwin has the highest ERA among pitchers with at least 1000 innings pitched in their careers, and Helling was cut by one of the most pitching-poor team in baseball. Sure, they'll command less than 5 million, but how much less in a pitching poor market?? I mean, Chan Ho Park is making 14 million a year now. I think it's worth it to take a shot on this guy. Before the arm trouble he was a 10 million a year-type pitcher, and he's only 32 or so. Sure you don't know exactly what you'll get, but then again I know what im going to get with Helling and Baldwin and I don't want it. So far, it looks like the Braves got it in the sphincter after last Saturday's performance. If he gets that curve going, then it's lights out for opponents. Not since Doc have I seen a Lord Charlie like Pedro's. And he can hit the ball pretty good, too! D'Amico has been OK but Astacio has been awesome. He's already thrown a 2 hiter and a 1 hitter. I knew his Colorado days were not a true indication of his worth. Just stay healthy Pedro! murphy May 24, 2002 He has been the lifesaver for this Mets team. By far the best player in a Mets uniform the first 2 months of the season. Great curve, good moving fastball and a nasty changeup. And his control is 10 times better than when he pitched in Colordo. I love watching him pitch. Wouldn't it be a dream if the Mets hitters could swing the bats as well as Astacio throws the ball? Gilinfiji June 13, 2002 Where would we be without "The Mule"? I was at Dodger Stadium for his gem against LA and was mesmerized. He should have at least three more wins (and be 10-2) if not for the bullpen blowing three games - one against the Padres and two against the Marlins - for him. He deserves a spot on this year's All-Star team. Shari August 7, 2002 Simply stated-We are lucky to have the mule. He's getting it done against teams he's supposed to. I know he didn't look good against Houston, but nobody is perfect. He is a good solid pitcher, provided he stays healthy he will continue to pitch solid and steady. I still like Pedro but he is obviously tired and should have had a few more days rest in between his last few starts. He's been pretty awful for the last month. The other day he game up 3 solo homers in the 4th inning against the Braves when the Mets started with a 5-0 lead to get it all tied at 6-6. I was shocked to see him bat in the fifth and then he went out that inning to get belted around some more and the Braves scores 6, not all off of him, in the 5th to kill the Mets. Now that his Mets career appears to be over he didn't end up quite the way he began. He was awesome for 4 months of last year and then terrible for 2. I couldn't understand why they wouldn't skip him a start last year to get him some rest. Looking at his overall career which has been pretty mediocre, his first 4 months with the Mets were probably his best stretch ever. There's no way however I would even dream of bringing him back next year. He could have been great, but ended up a flop. Etch 35 June 12, 2003 Well, I guess the writing is on the wall for Pedro now. While I must give it to him for being a gamer and trying to pitch hurt, he should have told someone earlier that his arm was practically falling off at the shoulder. Playing through pain shows dedication to the team, but he hurts the team and himself by trying to pitch with his shoulder as banged up as it is. I will remember "The Mule" for often times being effective and keeping the Mets in games when he clearly did not have his best stuff. He could adjust his game plan on the fly. Best of luck to Pedro. Reading what I did about him when he was a Met reminded me of the days before all this specialized surgery. You didn't have "rotator cuffs" and "impinged nerves" and such -- it was all lumped together in one big category, "sore arm." Lee March 24, 2006 One of the best breaking pitches I've ever seen. But he wasn't that good. Didn't get them to the playoffs Shickhaus Franks January 9, 2011 One of those fringe pitchers on Mets teams that were in between the 2000 NL pennant and the 2006 SHOULD'VE BEEN WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!!! Always liked his last name because I would yell "Get Your Astacio Nuts Here" because it sounded like Pistachio Nuts!!!! Alex May 23, 2021 I remember Pedro Astacio coming to the Mets and absolutely dominating the first few months he was with the team. He had a 2.50 ERA through the end of April 2002, a 2.71 mark through the end of May and a 2.92 mark through the end of June. Not coincidentally, the Mets had a winning record to that point. Then the wheels totally fell off. From July onward, he had a 6.90 ERA. In just 90 innings, he allowed TWENTY-TWO home runs. The Mets' demise coincided with Astacio's, as they finished the season 11 games under .500. Alex December 27, 2022 I sent Astacio a through-the-mail autograph request in 2007 through his home address. He didn't sign. Almost exactly a decade later, in 2017, I sent him another one. Still no response. He gets back to about 10% of requests per one website, so I'm not surprised by my lack of luck. I didn't remember them bringing him back for a second season. I thought 2002 was his only year with the club, but apparently he was with them in 2003, as well.
