Mr. Sparkle I'm amazed when a guy like this comes along and shuns the Mets. They were going to offer him a contract in 99 but he declined. Considering the potential the team had after the 98 season you'd think he'd be up for one last shot at a ring. Have another line Tony!
January 30, 2002 Bobby V made a huge mistake with Phillips who was a valuable role player in 1998. In the last weekend of the season when we got swept by the Bravos,on the Friday night game, Valentine sent in a young Jay Payton to pinch run for the veteran Phillips, and Payton was subsequently gunned down at 3rd on a terrible mistake by the rookie, trying to move from 1st to 3rd on a single. Bad move by Valentine. It set the tone for the series.
April 1, 2003 The winter before the 1998 season, Tony Phillips and the Mets were close on a deal, but it fell apart because Tony's agent wanted an incentive clause raising Tony's salary if he stayed off drugs. I believe the word for that is "chutzpah," and Tony went unsigned until the middle of the season, when the Blue Jays picked him up, and we got him a month later.
He was acquired partially for his versatility, and yet he exclusively played only corner outfield for us. He had his moments offensively.
August 4, 2009 I just hope that Tony finally got sober.
