Share your memories of Shawn Gilbert HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY: Brendan Barker The only thing I remember about Shawn Gilbert was that I saw him homer in a game during June of '97 when we were getting blown out by the Marlins. I think it might have been his first. He was an ok guy... Mr. Sparkle December 16, 2001 No real major league talent but 200% hustle. He reminded me of Rudy fromm the movie "Rudy." I was glad to see him hook up with the Dodgers. Too bad Rickey Henderson didn't have this guys drive. Too bad Gilbert didn't have 1/10th of Henderson's talent. Joe Figliola July 22, 2003 Shawn, I think, was one of the oldest Mets rookies in club history. And, yes, I do remember the home run against the Marlins... I scored it! I also recall a lot of Mets fans pulling for this guy. He showed a lot of heart and giddy-up during his short stay in NYC. Jack Howe May 4, 2005 Shawn rented the room over my garage in Chesapeake, VA when he played with the Norfolk (Tidewater) Tides, the Mets AAA minor league team in '97, and got "called up" to the big leagues for the first time. What an excited "young" guy he was! (And I lost my supplemental income.) My best to Shawn & Diana, wherever you are. Keep in touch.
