HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY:

Mr. Sparkle
If you follow the Mets minor leagues at all it's amazing how many top prospects go through the system and are made out to be the next great ballplayer. "Little" Ricky Otero was one of them. And like so many of the others, he was a bust. A great minor leaguer who couldn't cut it in the show. There's a ton of guys like Ricky out there who never pan out.

I think the harsh criticisms of Otero on this page aren't very justified. Was he awful when he debuted for the Mets in 1995? Yes. But he hit .291 as a prospect in the Mets system prior to his callup, with plenty of stolen bases, extra base hits and low strikeout totals. And you can certainly make the argument the Mets gave up on him too quick because he was pretty serviceable as an everyday player with the Phillies in 1996, hitting .273 with 7 triples and 16 steals while striking out just 30 times in 449 plate appearances. Plus, he was an excellent defensive center fielder, leading the league in range factor and tallying 8 OF assists. But the Mets had a crowded OF in '96 with Gilkey, Lance Johnson, Ochoa, Everett and Huskey, so if anything the criticism should really be directed at the Mets for not getting a better player in return than Geisler, who had one good year in 1993 but could hardly be called a top prospect. In a nutshell, I feel like Otero was a capable player who could have be used like a Juan Lagares or Endy Chavez type player if not for getting squeezed out of a crowded Mets outfield, and he left a poor taste in the mouths of fans with a bad showing in '95 (at the age of 23) and that's all people choose to remember. I think he deserves better than that.

However, what I really came on here to comment on was that it says on his Baseball Reference Bullpen page that he "abused drugs and alcohol and was found to be living under a bridge in Cancun, Mexico in 2009." I wonder if there's any truth to that and, if so, if he's cleaned himself up since then. Sad story if true.
