HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY:

Bernard Aguinaldo
Another Met (Benny Ayala was another) who hit a home run in his 1st at-bat. Thanks to Mike Fitzgerald for having a good enough year in 1984 I guess, for the Mets to get the final major acquision for the 1986 championship, hence Gary Carter!

I liked Mike. He was a steady catcher and had he not been included in the Gary Carter deal, would've been a useful backup. However, when you get a starting catcher, you have to give up a starting catcher.

Besides the home run in his first AB, I remember Mike contributing a home run in a nationally televised Monday night game against (I think--help me out, here) the Cubs to help the Mets stay close in the '84 Eastern division race against the Cubs.

I have attended over 200 MLB games in my 51 years on this planet. The one and only foul ball I ever caught was off the bat of Mike at Shea in 1984. Burt Hooten was the pitcher and I was sitting right behind the plate in the Loge box seats. I still have that ball somewhere.

Fitzgerald was a nice defensive catcher who threw well. He suffered a badly broken index finger on a foul tip, though. When it healed, there was a big knot. I don't know how he could throw effectively after that. Wonder what the before-and-after caught- stealing stats are?

Mike came out and spoke to my son's baseball team. He gave them all some great tips and some helpful advice. He told them, "Don't let anyone ever tell you you're too small, not strong enough", etc. My son's a catcher, and he spent a few minutes with him giving him some tips. I think any big league player who takes the time out of his schedule to inspire a group of boys, is a great guy.

I went to a birthday party today, in Long Beach, CA, for son's 8 year old friend. I was talking to the birthday boy's mom, who mentioned that he'd been on a little league team coached by an ex-major league catcher named Mike Fitzgerald. It didn't take long for the bell to ring! The boy's mom said he was a very nice guy, great with the kids. Good to hear something positive about an athlete these days.
