Share your memories of Shaun Fitzmaurice HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY: Chuck Rothman I'm one of the few who remembers Shaun Fitzmaurice. I was at his major league debut (as a starter). Loved the name and was sorry he never played more. Blood Vow August 24, 2006 Shaun went down in the history books by hitting a home run leading off the only baseball game played as part of the '64 Olympics in Tokyo. '64 was yet another "demo" year for baseball. The US team of collegians (Shaun was a Golden Domer and his teammates included Mike "Superjew" Epstein) beat a Japanese sandlot team. I think Shaun is a now a real estate agent in Richmond. Mets fan in Maine December 29, 2007 According to his baseball card in the One-Year Winners series, in 1965 Fitzmaurice went right from Notre Dame to the the minors (Williamsport), where he led the league in outfield assists and hit .262. He's one of the forgotten Mets of the mid-'60s. Bob P April 29, 2008 Shaun had played college ball at Notre Dame. After being signed by the Mets as a non-drafted free agent in 1965, he was a September call-up in 1966. In his first major league appearance (September 9, 1966 at Shea against the Braves) Shaun batted leadoff and went 0-for-3. In his first at bat he was struck out by LHP Dick Kelley. Shaun struck out again his second at bat, then put a ball in play during his third plate appearance, popping out to Braves second baseman Woody Woodward. His first major league hit came on September 28, 1966, an infield single off Cubs pitcher Dick Ellsworth. He had one more major league hit, a single off Houston's Chris Zachary. His final major league appearance came in the second game of a doubleheader on the last day of the 1966 season. Shaun was batting eighth against Astros starter Dave Giusti. He went 0-for-3 with a walk, and the final major league pitch he saw was a called strike three from Claude Raymond leading off the bottom of the ninth. Shaun wound up the Pirates organization and then was traded to Atlanta in July of 1969, but never played another game in the majors. Mike T. July 28, 2012 Just received for my collection a postmarked 3 X 5 index card dated September 27, 1966 stamped from Flushing, NY with Shaun Fitzmaurice's autograph sent to a guy in Warrington, PA. That was an off-day Tuesday and Wednesday was his second to last game in a 9-game total career. Bev Nickel July 4, 2014 Shaun lived in the apartments with Nelson God Love him. Three doors away. He took me to his minor league games at that time was called the Columbus Jets. He was the perfect specimen of a ball player tall long legs and long trunk when he hit the ball he had perfect follow through. I was reminded of Shaun when I watched my son years later play. My son was in the newspaper all the time he was a slider if he didn't hit a HR he would make it always to first and he stole bases all the way home. He was a bit of a Hot Dog like Shaun. Richie my son used to clap, just daring the pitcher to try and throw him out. He would slide between the legs of second and third base. His coach gave an interview on Rich and he said that Rich was the most versatile player he ever coached. He knew if he told Rich to do something there was never a doubt it would be done. He played in organized leagues since he was 4 yrs old. He is 6'4. I would have loved to reach Shaun being we were friends for so long so he could have watched my boy on the field. Shaun was beautiful at bat and ran on defense and picked his hop and the had a grand arm. Miss him and never doubted he would play in the majors some day. Thanks for the memories.
