METS FANS SHARE THEIR MEMORIES OF GAMES FROM THE 2014 SEASON

March 31, 2014 Citi Field
Washington Nationals 9, Mets 7

After 25+ years of being on WFAN, the Mets begin a new era on the radio: 710 WOR-AM (Although they did broadcast 15 spring training games, some on weekday afternoons undoubtely angering Rush Limbaugh's fanbase). I didn't go to the game but watched on SNY beginning its 9th season (WOW, how time flies). But I wasn't totally happy that New York mayor deBlasio threw out the first pitch but I don't want to throw him under the bus since he's from the Boston area and a Red Sox fan. But I felt that honor should've gone to Ralph Kiner's family or maybe Ron Darling.

Mets offense is hot early and their starter pitches well until the 7th. Terry left Gee in for too long before turning to the horrible bullpen. 2 walks in a row to let the Nats tie the game? Sickening. Then Parnell (who should not be the closer) blows the lead, and the Mets lose in extras.

With this loss, the Mets begin the season with two consecutive defeats in their home ballpark. This hasn't happened since 1965, a year that the team won only 50 games. Let's hope that's not the case in 2014!

FIRST EVER METS INSTANT REPLAY CHALLENGE IS A SUCCESS! Hopefully Ike can take his 9th inning home run, and make it a postive.

My first visit to Citi in 2014 and it was a PUT IT IN THE BOOKS AND THEN SOME!!!! Partly sunny and 52 degrees but windy (I don't know why Citi Field didn't get a retractable roof, it would make it more comfortable on those cold April days but it is what it is). If life were fair, the Coupons would've ordered a RR but then again ILWF, I would be soaking in a jacuzzi with Kaitlyn Monte. Thank you Ike Davis for the walkoff Grand Slam in the 9th!!!

I listened to the radio broadcast. Gee pitched a good game; went into the 8th. Besides Curtis Granderson's first home run for the Mets in the 6th, the Mets bats were quiet for most of the game, spoiling a good pitching performance.

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Lagares walked, bringing up my man Recker. I was like, all right buddy, show everyone how clutch you are. But Terry Collins had him bunting, which makes sense I guess. His bunt led to a close play at second base, and an out call. For a second, things looked bad, but then Terry ran out of the dugout and challenged the call. The Mets won the challenge, and Tejada walked. Then-

Ike came up and hit the slam. Man, that was awesome. I loved Josh Lewin's call- it was something like- "the forgotten man! Ike Davis! We remember you buddy!"

Classic.

Here's the call, courtesy of Josh Lewin.

The 0-1, curve, socked in the air to right field- that's up- that's to the track, that's to the wall- A SLAM! BALLGAME! DAVIS WINS IT! ... (noise of crowd cheering) ...THEY'RE GONNA MOB HIM- THEY'RE GONNA MOB HIM AT HOME PLATE! THE METS WIN IT ON A WALK-OFF SLAM, FROM THE FORGOTTEN MAN! IKE DAVIS! WE REMEMBER YA KID! THEY'RE JUMPIN' ON HIM AT HOME PLATE! THE METS WIN! ... HOME RUN, RIGHT FIELD, IKE DAVIS, AND YOUR FINAL IS 6 TO 3!

Ike was traded yesterday. We'll remember ya, kid. Thanks for the memories.

After losing the first two games of the series, Mets take an early six run lead, only to see Mejia give up 8 runs in one inning! What is wrong with him lately? Anyways, the Mets tie it and trade runs with the Rockies until the red-hot Lagares gives the Mets the lead in the 9th. Farnsworth comes in to close, but gives up a walk-off home run to the unheard of Charlie Culberson. Only the Mets. But hey, they're over .500, right?

The main reason why the Mets lost (besides the overtaxed bullpen and too many men LOB) is due to the WORST UMPIRE IN MLB HISTORY: ANGEL HERNANDEZ!!! In 1988, he tossed the Omaha Royals organist because he played the theme from the old "Mickey Mouse Club" TV show and everyone knows about the incident with former Bears Super Bowl great Steve "MONGO" McMichael at Wrigley Field in 2001 but he robbed the Mets of a win when he called a third strike on Anthony Recker with the bases loaded and 2 out in the 11th inning, Recker got ejected and had to be restrained or he would've ripped up the Geneva Convention and given the DEVIL something I cannot describe on a family website. Bottom line, If I was the MLB commish, Angel would be long gone from umpiring and working the night shift as a cook in a filthy, bug infested diner in a UNSAFE NEIGHBORHOOD.

I'm not sure if it was before or after this loss, but on June 17, 2014, I wrote an email to my friend Jason which stated:

The Mets are so frustrating. I'm convinced Collins needs to fired, just to change the culture of losing that they've had since 2009. Collins is always making excuses for his players. We need a manager who will KICK THE PLAYER'S ASSES.

Jacob deGrom struck out seven batters in seven shutout innings for his first major league win. He would collect eight more victories during the season and become the National League Rookie of the Year. Jacob's catcher was Taylor Teagarden, who was playing in his ninth and final game as a Met.

In this game, the Mets built up a five-run lead against Gerrit Cole over the first two innings and never looked back. The Pirates scored three times in the fourth and fifth, but the Mets' pitchers retired the last thirteen batters to finish off the victory.

This was also the day that the Mets and Bucs honored the Negro Leagues by wearing special throwback uniforms. I'm not a big supporter of any kind of alternate jerseys, but the Mets' attire was acceptable since it was trimmed in their regular orange and blue colors. Also, the words "Royal Giants" displayed on the front turned out to be an accurate prediction for the World Series between Kansas City and San Francisco that year.

We knew Darvish was one of the best pitchers in the game and they took an early 1st inning lead. The bottom of the first, Darvish was clearly rattled. The Mets got to him early scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the first. There was a feeling that they were gonna have to take him out before the inning was over. He made it out of the inning and he didn’t really pitch great from that point on, but he didn’t allow another run. Other than that, the ending was close with the Mets winning 6-5.

A totally perfect day at Citi with sunny skies and not too hot or humid. An exciting game where the much maligned Chris Young hits a game tying HR and then "Soup" Eric Campbell comes up with the game winner because we didn't want any extra frames because of the Huey Lewis and the News post-game concert and at 7:30 PM they hit the stage and put on a one-hour show playing mostly their hits ("I WANT A NEW DRUG", "HEART OF ROCK & ROLL", "POWER OF LOVE" etc...) but the only downside was he played a new song which was OK & he didn't sing my favorite "HIP TO BE SQUARE". As they say at the toilet paper factory: $@#& HAPPENS!!!!!

This game will go down in the history of western civilization as the game in which the Mets decided to give a day off to their regular second baseman so that he'd be fresh for the All-Star game, to be played two days later. In other words, the Mets, substantially under .500 as a team, did not field their best lineup so that one of the team's stars could participate in an exhibition game.

A bunch of wimps and scoundrels. If it was Collins who made the decision, then Collins should be fired. If it was the GM, then the GM should be fired. If it was the batboy, then the batboy should be fired. And if it was the second baseman, then the second baseman should be traded.

As a postscript, it might be remembered that the aforementioned second baseman, the Mets' only All-Star representative of 2014, is making $5,700,000 for the year.

As a post-postscript, it should be noted that the aforementioned second baseman, in his only All-Star game at-bat, struck out on four pitches with a runner in scoring position.

The Mets turned a triple play in the sixth inning of this game. Eric Campbell fielded a grounder and threw to Daniel Murphy, who then threw to Lucas Duda to double up the hitter, Matt Kemp. For some reason, Yasiel Puig tried to score from second and was out on Duda's throw to Travis d'Arnaud to complete the tri-killing. A headline the next day described Puig's running decision as "aggressive", but it should have said "stupid".

The TP happened on Bartolo Colon's last pitch before coming out of the game. Colon's name was mentioned in trade rumors at the time, which means his tenure as a Met could have ended with a special touch. It didn't turn out to be the case, though.

As for the offense, the Mets hit four homers. Duda slugged twice while d'Arnaud and Ruben Tejada also went deep.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mets turned a triple play made possible by Yasiel Puig's attempt to score from second base on an infield ground ball. This was something that Mookie Wilson had twice pulled off successfully within four days to give the Mets a pair of victories back in 1983. Still, Keith Hernandez stated on television that no player should ever try to do this no matter how fast a runner he may be. It's hard to figure out what Puig was thinking at that moment, but he made it very clear that he was not Mookie Wilson.

Went to McFadden's before the game and I saw 3 guys from St. Louis (they were in Flushing for the US Tennis Open) and one of them was wearing a Yadier "Bleeping" Molina shirt. To a Mets fan, that's like giving Yoko Ono membership for the NRA!! LOL. Anyhow, the Mets won, got a free T- shirt, deGrom looked great (He kind of reminds me of the old Tim Linecum and also Mitch from "Dazed And Confused") and I'm 4-0 this season going to Citi and I'll be there for the home and season finale on Sept 28th vs an old foe: The Houston Astros!
