METS FANS SHARE THEIR MEMORIES OF THE MAY 1, 1988 GAME:
Michael

The Mets hit 3 consecutive homers in the 5th inning in this game. Teufel, Keith and Strawberry (who hit a MOONSHOT). And the next batter, McReynolds, hit a ball to the warning track.

After attending the crazy game the night before with my girlfriend at the time as fans, I came back for the Sunday afternoon game with my sports editor (I was a newspaper photographer for a daily suburban Indianapolis newspaper) with press passes.
What a blow out for the Mets as Michael noted, the Mets hit three consecutive homers, including one by Strawberry that went into the upper deck of right field.
After the game, Pete Rose, then Reds manager, surrounded by reporters to talk about the game the night before when he shoved umpire Dave Pallone, said he'd never seen a ball hit there at Riverfront before. Then, tired of the questions about Pallone, he dropped his pants in front of us all ... ending the news conference.
I went into the Mets locker room after the Rose news conference, and Strawberry was walking out. We practically ran into each other. I just kind of said, "Nice shot, Darryl." To which he so kindly and respectfully said, "Yeah, right." (Despite being a lifelong Mets fan, I thought "What an a--hole!") As a baseball fan, I truly realized how distance lends enchantment/familiarity breeds contempt, at least when it comes to the players.
Now it's your turn! Tell us what you remember of this game:
Please note:
We're looking for your comments about this specific
game. We've had people use this space to share their thoughts on how the
current season is going, or on ways that the Mets can improve the team.
Such comments, unless in the context of
this particular game,
will be considered off-topic and will be removed.
Example One
The Mets suck! They need to trade Smith and get somebody like
Jones.
This comment is off-topic and will be removed. It has nothing to do with
any specific game. But here's an acceptable alternative:
Example Two
The Mets suck! Smith made three errors in this game, and hit into a
double play, and the Mets blew a 5-0 lead. They need to get rid of Smith
and get somebody like Jones.
See the difference? Here you're getting the same point across, but it's in
the proper context. We wouldn't consider this message to be off-topic, and
we would let it remain.
We do appreciate anybody who takes the time to share their thoughts on our
site, and we hate to remove anybody's postings. But if we didn't take
steps to ensure that only on-topic messages were retained, The Ultimate
Mets Database would become a confusing jumble of unrelated comments,
and would thus be less enjoyable to visitors like you.
Thank you!
