Doc got rocked by the Cubs, breaking his personal 10-game winning streak against the Cubbies. After this loss, Gooden won his next twelve decisions against Chicago. The Cubs didn't beat him again until June 29, 1992. In 34 career starts against the Cubs, Doc was 24-4 with ten complete games and three shutouts. This game was tied, 2-2, going to the seventh, but four singles, a walk, and an error gave the Cubs a four-run inning. The Mets got a run back in the bottom of the ninth and had Kevin McReynolds at the plate as the tying run, but Lee Smith came in and nailed down his 28th save of the season. St. Louis also lost, so the Mets stayed 4.5 games behind the first place Cardinals.
